profile: DJ Gary Digitec
DJ Gary Digitec was born to Grenadian parents, in Ladbroke Grove in west London, England and then moved to Battersea in South London.
I became interested in music when I was about five. I listened to my brothers group (The Albians) who were successful in the late 70s and early 80s backing groups and artists like Brown Sugar and Karen Wheeler, plus notable others
When he was out I would take my brother's guitar and played along with the bass lines to tunes played by Tony Williams and David Rodigan, who had reggae shows on the Radio. I fell in love with reggae tunes because of the heavy bass lines
My first tune ever brought was Hurbman Hustling's Sugar Minott. I played and listened to mainly Reggae, Dancehall, Lovers, Revive and Studio 1 and a touch of Soca and RnB.
My brother-in-law and I started a sound system called Digi-Tec; we played mainly at house parties and for weddings, birthdays and special functions. We also played for a couple of years at Notting Hill Carnival on a float. These came to an end due to the strict laws on noise so the parties started to dry up and we put the sound to rest. However, I am still available for hire.
I have my own record label, Digi-Tec Records, started in1988. My aim was to give new artists a platform in which to show people what they could do whilst making a name for themselves and hopefully working with some big names. I have worked with Horseman who had a massive hit with Horsemove, & Follow Me (Follow Me was on the Digi-Tec label). Other artists I have worked with include: Blue Bird, Donnett Williams, and Aston Esson. I took some time out from the label to build my sound system. In 2003 I decided to concentrate again on Digi-Tec Records, working with Andrew Sloley - Pretty Little Brown Skin Girl.
I have done recordings at Mafia & Fluxy Studio and Progressive Sounds Studio with Patrick Donagon and the well-known keyboard player Bubblers, at his studio. I have also done recordings with artists like Lloyd Brown, JC Lodge, Michael Gordon, Leroy Simmonds, Winston Reedy and Glen Sloley.
I have recently teamed up with UK Homegrown label UK-home-grown-music studio. Soon to be released on Digi-Tec Records is the album Head to Head Vol 1 consisting of 20 tracks: 10 from Winston Reedy and 10 from Andrew Sloley.
My former CD album release was Digi-Tec Presents Volume 1, featuring Lloyd Brown, Winston Reedy, Michael Gordon, plus many more.
I also write and produce songs and build rhythm (riddim) tracks.
Join me every Saturday from 7 to 9 pm GMT for my Saturday Jam Session.
